Olympic Wrestler Finalist Forrest Molinari Seeks MMA Gold at RUF 61
Olympic Wrestler Finalist Forrest Molinari Seeks MMA Gold at RUF 61

In a compelling transition from Olympic-level wrestling to professional MMA, Forrest Molinari (1-0-0) is set to challenge featherweight champion Jaeleen Robledo (2-1-0) at RUF 61: Valentine's Day Massacre. The former U.S. Olympic wrestling finalist brings an impressive combat sports pedigree to what promises to be an explosive title bout on February 15th.
A Bay Area Champion's Origins
Born and raised in the Bay Area, Forrest Anne Molinari's journey to combat sports excellence began in Benicia, California. Her early years were marked by an undeniable athleticism and competitive drive, participating in everything from dirt bike riding to baseball. However, it was a fortuitous denial from the football team that led her to the wrestling mat – a moment that would define her athletic career.
"I wanted to play football with my friends," Molinari recalls. "I go to freshman orientation up to the sports table, and the athletic director Holden is sitting there running it, and I tell him I want to play football, and he laughs at me because I'm a little pipsqueak." That rejection turned into an opportunity when they suggested wrestling instead, expecting her to quit within a week. Instead, it sparked a 15-year journey to the pinnacle of women's wrestling.
Olympic Wrestling Legacy
Molinari's wrestling career is decorated with remarkable achievements. A four-time world medalist, including three gold medals at the Pan American Wrestling Championships, she established herself as one of the most formidable competitors in women's freestyle wrestling. Her international success includes multiple medals at prestigious tournaments such as the World Wrestling Championships and Pan American Games.
The intensity of her competitive spirit was perhaps most evident during the Olympic trials, where she advanced to the finals. Though she didn't secure the Olympic spot, her performances against world-class opposition demonstrated her elite-level abilities and unwavering determination.
The Transition to MMA
After an illustrious wrestling career, Molinari's transition to MMA seemed almost predestined. Her first exposure to the sport came in 2021 when she trained at the Pitbull Brothers gym in Natal, Brazil. There, she had her first sparring session with none other than Patricio Pitbull, one of the sport's most accomplished fighters.
"My first time ever sparring, didn't know a thing, couldn't even get a proper stance right, was with Patricio Pitbull," Molinari shares. Despite her inexperience, she displayed the heart of a champion, going five rounds with the veteran fighter. "Most people would be very nervous their first time sparring, and I felt very calm... I remember thinking to myself, like, this is what I was meant to do."
The MMA Lab: Forging a New Path
Now training at The MMA Lab in Phoenix, Arizona, Molinari has found her new home in combat sports. Under the guidance of her long-time mentor Mark Perry, who has been instrumental in her development for over seven years, she's rapidly adapting her world-class wrestling skills to the multifaceted demands of MMA.
Her professional debut at Borroka 1 on November 22, 2024, was nothing short of impressive. Facing Brigid Chase, Molinari secured a unanimous decision victory, demonstrating both her wrestling prowess and developing striking abilities.
Championship Aspirations
As she prepares for her title bout against Jaeleen Robledo at RUF 61, Molinari brings the same intensity and determination that marked her wrestling career. "I'm going to maul this girl, just like I did the last one, just like I did in wrestling," she declares with characteristic confidence.
Her approach to fighting mirrors her wrestling mentality – methodical, aggressive, and relentless. "The second I get hit with something that I knew was too clean... we call it seeing red, and I see red immediately," Molinari explains, describing her response to adversity in the cage.
The Making of a Complete Fighter
What sets Molinari apart is not just her world-class wrestling background, but her attitude toward growth and competition. Training three times a day while maintaining balance in her life, she exemplifies the dedication required to excel at the highest level of combat sports.
Her wrestling foundation provides a formidable base, but Molinari is far from a one-dimensional fighter. She's embraced the striking aspects of MMA with the same fervor that made her an international wrestling success. "I live and breathe it, like I did wrestling. It's all I talk about," she says of her new passion.
Looking Ahead: RUF 61 and Beyond
The upcoming title fight at RUF 61: Valentine's Day Massacre represents more than just a championship opportunity – it's a chance for Molinari to showcase the seamless transition she's made from wrestling to MMA. With her combination of world-class grappling, developing striking, and unwavering determination, she's poised to make a significant impact in the sport.
